Marisol's Story

I am 35 years old and work as a judicial secretary of an appellate court. I love reading, cooking and spending time with my husband and our 5 children (two children are from previous relationships and three are ours together).

My husband and I had decided that raising 4 children was plenty, so he had a vasectomy. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the vasectomy didn’t work and I was pregnant with our 3rd son!

After my son was born, I decided I would have a tubal ligation. I asked my doctor and he told me he would highly recommend another method called the Essure procedure. He gave me a brochure and told me he had been very successful with the procedure. I looked it up on-line and read about the procedure. I spoke to my husband and we agreed to do it.

The day of the procedure, I was given general anesthesia and I went to sleep. When I woke up, I asked my husband if it was over. It only took the doctor an unbelievable 8 minutes to place the devices. I didn’t feel any pain, but I felt a little nauseated from the general anesthesia. When I came home, I took care of my children, cooked, and cleaned. Two days later it snowed and I went outside and shoveled snow!

I was happy when the HSG test confirmed 3 months later, that the Essure procedure had worked and I could rely on Essure for permanent contraception.

I felt there were many positive benefits of the Essure procedure. I was happy there was no cutting, no pain, no scars, no uncomfortable gas, and same day recovery. It did not affect my menstrual cycle.

I must say, though, I did not like that I was put to sleep. Because of the general anesthesia, I was not supposed to nurse for 24 hours. I wasn’t aware of this. The anesthesiologist administered something that would allow me to nurse after 12 hours. I think a simple local would have been fine.

I have been recommending the Essure procedure to all my friends and they are all amazed when I tell them about it. I feel it was the best choice for me and I’m very happy I heard about it in time.
