I tell my patients that I was very uncomfortable offering laparoscopic tubal ligation in the past because I felt it was like shooting a bird with a cannon. But Essure really is easy. I also mention experiences from other patients. I tell them about the one patient I did at 12:30pm who was home by quarter of 2:00, slept until 3:30, went to Pilates at 5:30, and then went to dinner at 7:00 with her husband. And that's not the exception, that's generally the way it is.

I have found patients love the advantages of the 'virtually non-invasive' Essure procedure. Gone are patient complaints of post-operative pain. Essure is attractive to women who may have been avoiding LTL or whose partner is contemplating (and contemplating...) vasectomy.

I have done very few post-partum tubal ligations since I started performing Essure in the office. Patients would much rather have increased safety, reduced pain, avoidance of a incision (not to mention better efficacy) over the perceived convenience of 'getting it over with while you are in the hospital'.

When I tell them it is permanent, hormone free, requires only local anesthesia with possible mild sedation, doesn't require general anesthesia or incisions, takes about ten minutes to perform, is virtually pain free and they can return to work the next day, they become as excited as I am and are delighted to have this option.

We finally have a technique for women that is comparable in simplicity, accessibility and safety to vasectomy in men. Although the complications of surgical tubal ligation are uncommon, when they occur they may be life threatening. The rare deaths associated with tubal ligation were unacceptable in my mind.
